Stir-Fried Beef with Chinese Five-Spice and Asparagus

Ingredients (serves 3-4 persons)

Lobo Chinese Five-Spice Blend (Pae-Lo Powder) 1 tablespoon
Water 2.5 litres
Seasoning sauce 50 g (1.8 oz)
Soy sauce 50 g (1.8 oz)
Palm sugar 50 g (1.8 oz)
Matured galangal, thickly sliced and lightly crushed 30 g (1 oz)
Matured ginger, thickly sliced and lightly crushed 20 g (0.7 oz)
Chinese celery stem 50 g (1.8 oz)
Sesame oil 2 tablespoons
Beef (short plate or loin) 1 kg (35 oz)
Long chopped asparagus 300 g (10.5 oz)
Vegetable oil 2 tablespoons
Thinly sliced garlic 30 g (1 oz)
Chinese Five-Spice beef chunks 200 g (7 oz)
Chinese Five-Spice soup 3 tablespoons
Oyster sauce 1 tablespoon
Sugar ½ teaspoon
Sesame oil 1 teaspoon
Ground pepper ½ teaspoon
Red hot chili, chopped into long strips, for garnish


If your family loves traditional Beef Stew, then surprise them with this Oriental version and watch their surprise. The unique cooking expertise of Lobo has created the sensational flavour of Chinese spices which gives this dish its distinctive flavour.

  • Bring water to the boil. Add Chinese Five-Spice Blend. Mix and flavour with seasoning sauce, soy sauce and palm sugar.
  • Add matured galangal, matured ginger, Chinese celery and sesame oil. Continue to boil for a while.
  • Add beef into soup and boil at low heat until beef is cooked, tender and savoury.
  • Put asparagus into boiling water with salt and vegetable oil. Remove and wash with cold water.
  • Stir fry garlic with vegetable oil until aromatic. Add beef, asparagus and remaining ingredients. Stir fry at high heat until cooked.
  • Serve with steamed rice.


  • Do not boil beef too long, otherwise, it will not hold after frying.
